I’ve watched Food Inc. a couple of
times now, however every time I’ve seen the documentary it’s left me with a
different impression. This particular time I think what stood out to me the
most was the correlation between NAFTA being passed and the increase in
immigration. The whole reason this shocked me so much is because although the
documentary has been out for a couple of years now immigration and whether
we’re going to have a reform is still a big issue. Furthermore, I found it
incredible that we still hear about the exploitation of immigrant workers.
Additionally, every time I watch the
documentary I’m still shocked by how little the consumer actually know about
what they’re consuming, and how the large corporations tried to play the fact
that food isn’t receiving the proper labeling off to not wanting to scare the
consumer. I think that if large corporations are going to lie about what’s in
their foods the least they can do is not skirt around the subject and make it
seem as if the care about their consumers when the reality is that they’re only
acting upon their best in interest. The fact in the matter that the issue is
not that they don’t want to scare their consumers, but rather that they’re
afraid of how the public would react if they knew what was really being put
into their food.
If I had my own food formula it
would be “Eat what you need, and when in doubt drink water.” The reason this
would be my formula is because most of the time when we think we’re hungry we’re
really thirst, and water is something that in comparison to food we really don’t
have to worry about. For me it would be fairly easy enough for me to follow,
after all my parents already get the majority of the meat and produce from the
different greenmarket locations available throughout the city.
